AstraZeneca vaccine is NOT the recommended vaccine for people aged under 50.
This is because of the risk of blood clots (thrombosis) with low platelets (thrombocytopenia).
This is a rare type of blood clot and is different to the common types of blood clots such as DVT and pulmonary emboli, that we are all aware of.
Patients 50 years of age and under should wait for access to the Pfizer vaccine.
We advise that patients should only have the AstraZeneca vaccine after a detailed discussion with their GP ,
AstraZeneca vaccine appears safe for people in the over 50 years age demographic.
